What is a standard drink in Australia?

A standard drink in Australia contains 10 grams of pure alcohol, whatever the type of drink. It is a way to compare drinks, because a glass of wine, a pint of beer and a nip of spirits are different sizes and strengths. This standard drinks calculator for Australia works it out from the volume and alcohol percentage (ABV) on the label, and adds the number of drinks you have.

How to calculate standard drinks

The formula is volume in litres × alcohol percentage × 0.789 = standard drinks. The 0.789 is the density of alcohol in grams per millilitre. Worked example: a 375 mL can of 4.8% beer has 0.375 × 4.8 × 0.789 = 1.4 standard drinks. A whole 750 mL bottle of 13% wine has about 7.7. Many people pour more than they think, so measuring helps.

Drink Standard drinks (approx.)
Full-strength beer, 375 mL 1.4
Pint of full-strength beer, 570 mL 2.2
Glass of wine, 150 mL at 12.5% 1.5
Spirit nip, 30 mL at 40% 0.9
Bottle of wine, 750 mL 7.7

Australian alcohol guidelines

The NHMRC Australian guidelines to reduce health risks from drinking alcohol (2020) advise healthy adults to drink no more than 10 standard drinks a week and no more than 4 on any one day. For pregnant or breastfeeding women, and for people under 18, not drinking is the safest choice. The calculator compares your total with these limits.

Alcohol and kilojoules

Alcohol provides 29 kJ per gram, nearly as much as fat, and it comes with no protein, fibre or vitamins. The result above shows the energy from alcohol alone. Mixers, beer carbohydrate and sugar add more. If you track your intake, include drinks in your totals using the calorie calculator and the kJ to calories converter.
