Acetyl-l-carnitine (ALC) and alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) are two well known antioxidant nutrients. Acetyl-l-carnitine is found in most cells in the body, including brain, nerve, heart, liver and sperm cells, where it participate in metabolising fatty acids into energy by the mitochondria. Alpha-lipoic acid is a water and lipid soluble antioxidant required by the mitochondrial matrix pyruvate dehydrogenase complex, which is the starting point of the Krebs or TCA (energy) cycle.
